How to use the word counter

    1. Type or paste text into the box. All counts update as you type.
    2. Read the totals: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines, plus estimated reading and speaking time.
    3. Check Top keywords to see the words you use most, ignoring common words such as "the".

    Example

The text Hello world. How are you? on one line and Fine! on the next has 6 words, 31 characters, 26 characters without spaces, 3 sentences, 1 paragraph and 2 lines. A 1,000-word article takes about 4 minutes 13 seconds to read silently and about 7 minutes 9 seconds to read aloud.

    Frequently asked questions

How are characters and words counted?

Characters are counted the way you see them, so an emoji such as 👍🏽 or a flag counts as one character even though it is made of several code points. Words and sentences use your browser's built-in text segmentation, which also splits Chinese, Japanese and Thai text that has no spaces between words.

    How is reading time estimated?

Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults reading non-fiction in English. Speaking time assumes 140 words per minute, a comfortable pace for a talk or presentation.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. Everything is counted in your browser, and the text is never sent to a server or stored.
