CSV to JSON Converter

Convert CSV to JSON as you type.

How to convert CSV to JSON

  1. Paste CSV into the left box, or copy cells straight from a spreadsheet and choose the Tab delimiter.
  2. Pick the delimiter your file uses: comma, semicolon or tab.
  3. Keep First row is a header ticked to get an array of objects; untick it to get an array of rows.
  4. Keep Detect numbers, booleans and null ticked for typed values, or untick it to keep every value a string.
  5. Copy the JSON or select Download to save converted.json.

Your CSV is parsed in the browser and is never uploaded, so it is safe to use with customer exports.

Example

This CSV:

id,name,active
1,Ada,true
2,"Turing, Alan",false

becomes this JSON:

[
  {
    "id": 1,
    "name": "Ada",
    "active": true
  },
  {
    "id": 2,
    "name": "Turing, Alan",
    "active": false
  }
]

Frequently asked questions

Does it handle quoted fields and line breaks inside cells?

Yes. The parser follows RFC 4180: fields in double quotes may contain the delimiter, line breaks and doubled quotes (""). Both Windows (CRLF) and Unix (LF) line endings work, a byte order mark is ignored and blank lines are skipped. An unclosed quote is reported with its line and column.

Which values are converted to numbers?

With detection on, plain decimal numbers become JSON numbers, true and false become booleans, and empty cells and null become null. A number is only converted when it reads back exactly the same, so ZIP codes with leading zeros (02134), version-like values such as2.0 and integers too large for JavaScript stay strings and no digits are lost.

What if rows have different lengths?

Short rows get empty values for the missing columns. Extra cells get generated names such as field_5, and blank or repeated header names are made unique, so no data is dropped.
